Powered by an excellent all-around performance from freshman Sadie Homer (North Easton, Mass.), host Dean College collected its first win of the season with a 3-0 sweep of Fitchburg State in non-league women's volleyball action on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
A tense opening frame saw the Bulldogs was tied at 24-24 following a kill from Falcon star Leah Sheehan. Dean was able to take the lead and the set when they got back-to-back kills from senior Kait Anderson (Clinton, Conn.).
In the second set, the Bulldogs led wire-to-wire as Homer dished out eight of her match-high 24 assists in the 25-21 triumph.
Unlike the previous set, the Bulldogs fell behind quickly and had to rally to secure the set and match victory. Down 5-0 early and even 17-10 late in the frame, Dean finished the set by scoring 15 of the final 23 points, highlighted by kills from Anderson, sophomore Miranda Marquez (San Pedro, Calif.) and senior Melanie Rios-Nevarez (Alta Vega, Puerto Rico) and a pair of service aces from Homer on their way to the first victory of the Joe Hanrahan era.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Anderson (13 kills, seven digs) and Rios-Nevarez (ten kills, six digs and five service aces) each had strong efforts in addition to Homer's 24 assists and eight digs.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Wednesday when they visit Curry College for a 6:00 PM showdown with the Colonels.
