Makayla Rudder (Springfield, Mass.) scored 23 of her game-high 29 points in the second half and Dean College grabbed a crucial 78-66 win over Newbury College in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's basketball action on Thursday afternoon.
The game, which was postponed on Wednesday, was played on Thursday at Eastern Nazarene.
For the Bulldogs, the victory pushed them into sole possession of fifth place in the league standings with one final regular season game remaining.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Rudder was dominant in the final 20 minutes, going 9-for-12 from the field as Dean erased a five-point deficit by outscoring the Nighthawks 48-31 in the second half.
The turning point in the contest came at the start of the second half as the Bulldogs went on a 15-4 run highlighted by nine from Rudder, four more from Jamaya Cleveland (Greensboro, Ga.) and a basket from Nicole Romero (Winchendon, Mass.).
Newbury did rally to take a brief one point lead, but the momentum had clearly shifted in Dean's favor. The Bulldogs pulled away in the middle of the fourth quarter when a four-point advantage ballooned as Rudder, Romero, Cleveland and Amanda Miressi (New Rochelle, N.Y.) all scored during the run. When the smoke cleared, Dean was in front, 70-62 with less than two minutes to play.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
In addition to Rudder's standout performance, Cleveland added 14 points, four rebounds, three assists and four steals and Iindia Pina (Carver, Mass.) added 11 points and six steals. Meanwhile, Romero chipped with ten points for the Bulldogs.
For Newbury, Savannah Olsen ended with nine points, 19 rebounds and four assists.
Dean is back in action on Saturday when they play host to Bay Path in the final home game of the regular season. Tip off for that contest is slated for 12:00 PM.
