THE LEAD:
Cooper Valinski
converted a penalty kick with less than two minutes remaining in regulation and New England College stunned visiting Dean College, 1-0, in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Bulldogs actually had a chance to get on the board late in the second half when Davonn Smith (Lawrence, Mass.) got by his defender and found himself one-on-one with the Pilgrims' goaltender. NEC's Robbie Ferguson was able to get his foot on Smith's shot, however, keeping the game scoreless.

Valinski was awarded the penalty kick after he was taken down inside the box. His game-winning goal was a low shot at 88:31, sending the host Pilgrims to victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Devin Moore (Walpole, Mass.) made 11 saves in between the pipes for Dean, while his counterpart, Ferguson stopped six to collect the shutout triumph.

NEC held a 31-15 edge in shots, while the Bulldogs had more corner kicks (5-4).

UP NEXT:
Dean returns to action on Wednesday when they host Rhode Island College at 3:30 p.m.
