Led by a trio of monster offensive performances from a pair of seniors and a freshman, Dean College secured a spot in the upcoming New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's lacrosse tournament with an 18-11 win over Mitchell College on Tuesday afternoon.
Prior to the start of the game, the program honored four seniors who were playing in their final home contest – Gianni Cugini (Marlboro, Md.), Brody Fredericks (Weare, N.H.), Westley Reel (Lakeville, Conn.) and Anthony Trasacco (Cheshire, Conn.) – a group that went a combined 25-8 on the friendly confines of Grant Field in their four years.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Bulldogs wasted very little time getting on the board as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead less than four minutes into the game and were still ahead 6-2 after the first period.
Things continued to trend in Dean's favor as they once again scored the first four goals of the frame and moved to a 10-2 advantage.
The Mariners did get three straight goals spanning the second and third periods to whittle the Bulldog lead down to 10-5, but Dean scored five of the next six goals to grab total control of the contest heading into the fourth quarter, 15-6.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Trasacco had an explosive performance, recording 11 points (six goals, five assists), while Fredericks ended with six goals and one assist. Louis Piccolo (Foxboro, Mass.) ended with five goals, giving him 38 this season and his fourth game this season with five or more.
Mitchell was paced by Kyle Marsh's five goals, while Ethan LePain recorded two goals and five assists and Jade Shields finished with three goals and three assists.
Both goalkeepers – the Mariners' Marcel Quinlan (17) and Dean's Alex Govoni (Lakeville, Mass.) 19 of his own – performed well.
Mitchell will be back in action on Saturday when they host Becker College, while the Bulldogs will wrap up their regular season on Thursday at Nichols. Their opponent for the postseason tournament will be announced Saturday night with the conference semifinals taking place on Saturday, April 27.
