A 15-5 run to open the second half broke open a tight contest and allowed the visiting Wheaton College Lyons to escape the confines of Pieri Gymnasium with a 86-75 non-league victory on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After back and forth action for the first ten minutes, Wheaton scored six straight points to take a 26-16 lead with seven minutes remaining in the first half. After a Bulldog timeout, the hosts scored nine straight points, capped by a Jordan Booker (Waterbury, Conn.) jumper that cut the lead to one.
Two minutes later, Traijan Powell (Sierra Vista, Ariz.) hit back-to-back three pointers to tie the game at 31. The teams traded hoops for the final three minutes of the half and entered the break tied at 35.
Wheaton scored 13 of the first 15 points of the second half to turn a tie game into a 50-37 lead. Dean closed the gap to six on a triple from Booker with nine minutes remaining in the half and later, trimmed the lead to five on another deep ball from Powell and two free throws from Kevin Clark (Miami Gardens, Fla.).
With six minutes to go, D'caran Anderson (Compton, Calif.) hit a three pointer to cut the lead to two (65-63), but Dean could get no closer. The Bulldogs were outscored 21-12 over the final six minutes as the visiting Lyons held on the for the victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Booker led the Bulldogs with 21 points and nine assists while Jordan Lynch-Rexroth finished with 12 points and nine rebounds. Joel Jones (Fayettevile, N.C.) and Powell finished with ten points each and eight and seven rebounds respectively.
The Bulldogs host Thomas on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
