Dean College overcame a slow start and the host Bulldogs won the final three sets of the match in dispatching of Nichols College, 3-1, in non-league women's volleyball action on Thursday evening in the first-ever meeting of the two teams.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After the 25-17 loss in the opening set, Dean came out of the second frame on fire, jumping out to a 12-4 advantage at one point before settling for a 25-19 triumph that evened the score.
The pivotal third set immediately went on the side of the Bulldogs after they took an early 6-1 lead. Even though the Bison closed the gap to one at 14-13, Dean never lost the lead on their way to a 25-22 win.
Unlike the previous three, the fourth set was close - tied 15 times with the last occurrence at 24-24. The Bulldogs sealed the match moments later, taking advantage of a Nichols miscue and a Paola Gonzalez (Southbridge, Mass.) service ace.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
The Bison trio of Megan Gardner (11), Sabrina Boermeester (10) and Jayleen Fegan (10) combined for 31 of Nichols 38 kills. Zoe Chevrette, meanwhile, ended with 25 assists and 13 digs.
Dean was paced by Kait Anderson (Clinton, Conn.), who ended with eight kills and 13 digs and Nicole Defosses (Colorado Springs, Colo.) who racked up 19 assists, 20 digs and four service aces.
Dean is back in action on Tuesday when they host New England College in NECC action beginning at 7:00 p.m.
