Colby-Sawyer erased an early first quarter deficit and the visiting Chargers clamped down defensively and raced past Dean College, 58-42, in non-league women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Things actually started off extremely well for the Bulldogs, as they jumped out to an 18-4 lead after a first quarter that saw them hold the Chargers scoreless for the final 6:23 of the period.
As bad as Colby-Sawyer struggled in the opening period, they were as efficient in the second, outscoring Dean 24-4 to go into halftime in front, 28-22.
During the game-changing 19-0 stretch, the Chargers held the Bulldogs without a basket for more than seven minutes as they got seven points from Tianna Sugars, and five each from Lexie Hamilton and Kristen Donaghey.
Dean's offensive struggles continued into the third period where they shot just 16 percent from the floor (3-for-18), missed seven free throws, and saw their deficit grow to ten at 40-30.
Colby-Sawyer pushed their lead out to as many as 16 on several occasions in the fourth as Dean made just one basket in the first five minutes of the period.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
The Bulldogs shot just 27 percent from the field for the game, including a frigid 1-for-17 from behind the arc.
Sugars proved to be a dominant force on the interior for the Chargers, finishing with game-highs of 23 points and 13 rebounds. Hamilton, meanwhile, totaled 11 points, 12 assists, six rebounds and five steals for Colby-Sawyer.
The Bulldogs are off until Tuesday, January 8 when they host New England College in NECC action. Tipoff is slated for 3:00 PM.
