Mackenzie Souza (New Bedford, Mass.) blasted her seventh homerun, going 3-for-3 with four runs scored and three RBI to power Dean College to a single game 21-8 victory over Anna Maria in non-league softball action on Tuesday afternoon.
The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was called due to weather and will not be made up.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Bulldogs scored nine runs in the first and then six more in the second to take a commanding lead enroute to a season-best 21 runs.
Karissa Menzinger (Centereach, N.Y.) smacked a two-run double and had an RBI single in the bottom of the first as the Bulldogs sent 14 batters to the plate to jump in front, 9-3.
After Michelle Cilley blasted a homerun to left in the second for Anna Maria, Dean pushed six runs across in the second then two more in the third – highlighted by Souza's bomb to left center – to move their advantage to 17-4.
Anna Maria did get four runs in the fourth with three coming on a three-run shot by Victoria Falco.
Ahead, 17-8, Souza and Courtney Holden (Bridgeport, Conn.) each drove in runs in the fourth to add to their offensive output.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Miranda Seacord (Cambridge, N.Y.) went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, while Menzinger also had three hits, three RBI and two runs scored.
Shelby Smith (Southwick, Mass.), meanwhile, picked up her fourth win in the circle and had a hit, two runs scored and drew two walks at the plate.
Dean is back in action on Thursday when they travel to Southern Vermont for a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) doubleheader against the Mountaineers.
