Attleboro, Mass. – A pair of Dean College softball standouts grabbed New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) All-Conference accolades it was announced recently by the league office.
Sophomores Courtney Holden (Bridgeport, Conn.) and Melanie Rios-Nevarez (Alta Vega, Puerto Rico) were named to the league's third-team and second-team, respectively following the program's first season as a member of the conference.
Holden, who also serves as the College's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) President, finished her second season with a .329 average and ten RBI in 31 games. She had 28 hits overall and ended with a .387 on-base percentage and a .400 slugging percentage. Holden had seven multi-hit games, including a three-hit performance in an 11-2 win over Wheelock College.
Rios-Nevarez, meanwhile, scooped up second-team all-league honors following a campaign that saw her start all 34 games and finish with a .325 average. After slow start offensively, Rios-Nevarez came on strong beginning with a five-hit, five RBI performance in a win over Southern Vermont, which sparked an eight-game hitting streak.
Nine of her ten stolen bases came against NECC opponents and those ten steals ranked fifth in the conference. Not to mention, Rios-Nevarez smacked three homeruns, drove in 21 runs and scored 26 more while collecting 12 multi-hit games and at least one hit in 21 of 34 games.
That duo, along with several other key contributors are expected to return to the Bulldogs in 2019.
