Host Mount Ida opened up a 6-1 lead after two innings and the Mustangs never looked back, taking a 12-2 decision over Dean College in non-league softball on Tuesday afternoon. Mount Ida's Alisa Benson collected three hits, while Shelby Nolan drove in three runs to lead Mustang attack.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Dean actually got on the board first in the first when Karissa Menzinger (Centereach, N.Y.) smacked a single to right that chased home Melanie Rios-Nevarez (Vega Alta, Puerto Rico), who had a one-out double earlier in the inning.
After Mount Ida evened the score in the bottom of the first, the Mustangs pushed five more runs across in the second as both Benson and Nolan drove in runs.
The Bulldogs did get one run back in the third when they recorded singles from Olivia Cassidy (Concord, Mass.), Alexis Portales (San Antonio, Texas) and Rios-Nevarez to load the bases and then Menzinger was hit by a pitch to force home a run.
Nolan delivered a two-run single in the third for the Mustangs and they then plated four runs in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run single by Katie Jaroneczyk.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Rios-Nevarez had two of the Bulldogs' seven hits, while Menzinger drove in both Dean runs.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Saturday when they return to conference action with a doubleheader at Wheelock. First pitch is slated for 11:00 AM.
