THE LEAD:
Makenzie Souza (New Bedford, Mass.) hit a two-run homerun in the bottom of the sixth in the nightcap of a twinbill and host Dean College escaped with a doubleheader split with the College of Saint Joseph on Wednesday afternoon in non-league softball action.

The Lady Saints took a marathon 16-11 decision in the opener in a contest that lasted close to three hours and the Cardinal and White won the second, 7-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME 1 – COLLEGE OF SAINT JOSEPH 16, DEAN COLLEGE 11:
Dean trailed from the start but their offense continued to make the contest interesting in the later innings.

The Lady Saints scored five runs in the first and then two runs each in the second and third. The Bulldogs' lone run in the first three innings came on solo homeruns from Alexis Portales (San Antonio, Texas) in the first and Melanie Rios-Nevarez (Alta Vega, Puerto Rico) in the third.

The Bulldogs inched closer in the fourth when Rios-Nevarez's two-run single highlighted a four-run frame.

McKenzie Ebert smacked a two-run homerun in the top of the fifth to give the Lady Saints an 11-6 advantage, but Dean got one back when Alexandra Langhans (Naugatuck, Conn.) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the inning.

The Lady Saints were at it again in the sixth when they scored four runs with an RBI triple from Sierra Jaeger and an RBI double from Shelby Fenton doing most of the damage.

Dean actually scored four runs of their own in the sixth as Portales led off with a triple and then scored on a Rios-Nevarez ground out. Two unearned runs scored and then Courtney Holden (Bridgeport, Conn.) drove home the other on a single to center.

Timell Montgomery hit two homeruns and drove in four runs for the Lady Saints, who also got three hits and three RBI from Sierra Jaeger.

For the Bulldogs, Portales had three hits and was a double away from hitting for the cycle, while Rios-Nevarez drove in four runs with her two hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME 2 – DEAN COLLEGE 7, COLLEGE OF SAINT JOSEPH 6:
Things didn't look good for the Bulldogs early on as they fell behind 4-0 in the first on the strength of a three-run triple from Montgomery.

Karissa Menzinger (Centereach, N.Y.) drove in Dean's first run with an RBI single and then Souza drove in another in the second with a single of her own.

In the third, Rios-Nevarez blasted a two-run homerun and in the fifth when Souza hit her first round tripper of the game, the score was tied, 5-5.

The Lady Saints went back in front with a run in the sixth but with two outs in the bottom of the frame, Holden singled and then scored on Souza's second game-winning homerun of the season.

Montgomery had two hits and three RBI for the visitors in the nightcap, while Menzinger went 3-for-3 at the plate and Souza had three hits and four RBI.
