Wentworth erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the second and the host Leopards took a 14-3 decision over Dean College in non-league softball action on Tuesday afternoon. Scheduled as a doubleheader, the second game was cancelled due to inclement weather.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Bulldogs actually jumped out to a 2-0 lead after an RBI double from Melanie Rios-Nevarez (Vega Alta, Puerto Rico) and then she came around to score an unearned run later in the first.
Wentworth evened the game in the bottom of the frame when Emily Winter and pitcher Kayla DeMedeiros each smacked RBI singles.
Winter delivered the biggest blow in the eight-run second with a two-run single as the Leopards sent ten batters to the plate, registering five hits and taking advantage of two Dean errors.
The Bulldogs did get another run on the board in the third when another Rios-Nevarez single plated Alexis Portales (San Antonio, Texas), who singled and stole second to lead off the inning.
Already in front 10-3, Wentworth tacked on a run in the third on Winter's first career homerun and then they added three more in the fourth on a Rachel Willcut two-run single and then another DeMedeiros RBI single.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Karissa Menzinger (Centereach, N.Y.) suffered the loss in the circle for Dean, going the first three innings and allowing ten hits and seven earned runs.
DeMedeiros went the distance for the Leopards, yielding three hits and three runs to go along with eight strikeouts in picking up her fourth win of the season.
Winter was the star of the show, going 3-for-3 with four RBI and four runs scored.
For the Bulldogs, Rios-Nevarez had two of the three Dean hits and Portales had the other.
Dean is back in action on Thursday when they play host to Saint Joseph's of Vermont beginning at 3:00 p.m.
