Marshfield, Mass. – Following their first season of action in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC), Dean College has been picked to finish fourth in the league's preseason coaches' poll, which was released on Tuesday evening.
The Bulldogs garnered 26 points, while defending conference champion, Husson University, scooped up six first-place votes and 48 points for the top spot. They were followed by SUNY Maritime (42) and Castleton University (35), who were in front of Gallaudet (24), Alfred State (12) and Anna Maria (10).
Dean welcomes a squad of newcomers and several key returners from a team that won four games a season ago but were a combined 13 points away from a seven-win campaign.
Back to anchor a defense that finished 2017 second in the league in points allowed (17.4) is Gene Baisden, Jr. (Tampa, Fla.), who saw action in all ten games last year and finished with 42 tackles, four sacks, a forced fumble and a blocked punt return for a touchdown.
Offensively, the Bulldogs return a wealth of talent on the offensive line, led by all-conference selection Decory Billups (Manchester, N.H.) as well as veterans Rickey Benson (Deptford, N.J.) and Herby Emmanuel (South Fort Myers, Fla.) – both who saw action in eight contests in 2017.
Dean opens its 2018 season on Friday, August 31 at 7:00 p.m. under the lights at Curry College.
