Playing for the fourth time in as many days, Dean College couldn't get over the hump and the visiting Bulldogs dropped a 3-2 decision to Springfield College in non-league baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Archie Allen Field.
Colton Fitzsimmons (Fairhaven, Mass.) was strong on the mound for Dean, going six innings and allowing just three hits and one earned run while striking out six.
Unfortunately for Fitzsimmons and the rest of the Bulldogs, they went up against Brendan Kirck, who was as equally as effective, spinning six innings, allowing just one hit and no runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The only hit Dean could muster off of Kirck was an Andrew Dirito (Plymouth, Mass.) single to begin the second but he was later erased on an inning-ending double play.
Joshua Cerretani (Peabody, Mass.) found himself on second in the third when he walked and stole second but Kirck was able to escape the inning by registering a pair of strikeouts.
The Pride broke through in the fourth when Eduardo Martinez drove in a run with an RBI double.
Things stayed that way until the eighth when Mark Joao opened the inning with a triple off of reliever Austin Crowley (Holyoke, Mass.) and then pinch hitter John Gleason blasted a two-run homerun down the right field line.
It looked grim for the Bulldogs after Springfield reliever Duncan Satterlee recorded the first two outs of the top of the ninth. However, Brian Hadden (Newburyport, Mass.) and Jeff Sharnick (Stratford, Conn.) kept the line moving with back-to-back singles, setting the stage for Dirito, who drove them home with a triple to right.
Satterlee was able to settle down and record the final out of the game and collect his first collegiate save.
Dean is back in action on Saturday when they begin NECC play with a twinbill at Elms College in a doubleheader being played at Holyoke High.
