Amherst College erupted for ten runs in the top of the eighth inning and the visiting Mammoths rallied for a wild 21-14 win over Dean College in non-league baseball action on Sunday afternoon.
The visitors were paced by both Severino Simeone and Daniel Quin – their number eight and nine hitters – who went a combined 7-for-10 at the plate and drove in eight runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Dean got a quality start on the mound from Jason Bottone (Derby, Conn.), who went five innings, scattering nine hits and allowing four earned runs, but he was long gone by the time the Mammoths made their move.
The Bulldogs were up 7-3 after the third inning as Brian Hadden (Newburyport, Mass.), drove in two with a single ahead of RBI from Ben Chajet (Hillsboro Beach, Fla.) and Corey Karnila (Raritan, N.J.).
After Amherst closed within two at 7-5, Dean pushed six runs across in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run single by Rolando Marcano (Bridgeport, Conn.) and RBI doubles from Landon Fish (New Port Richey, Fla.) and Jeff Sharnick (Stratford, Conn.).
Trailing 13-5, the Mammoths grabbed two back in the top of the seventh and then their bats roared to life as they sent 15 batters to the plate in the game-changing inning. The biggest blow of the frame came off of the bat of Simeone, who blasted a three-run homerun down the left field line as part of the ten-run, eight-hit inning.
Now behind 17-13, Dean did get a run back in the eighth on a Travis Dinsdale (Worcester, Mass.) single but Amherst extended its lead in the ninth on the strength of a Quin three-run bomb to left center.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Five different Mammoths had three hits or more led by Quin's four hits, three runs and five RBI and Simeone's three hits, four runs and three RBI.
Hadden (three RBI, two walks), Fish (two runs, two RBI) and Sharnick (three runs, two RBI) all had three hits for the Bulldogs.
Dean returns to action on Monday when they face Curry College in a non-league affair on Monday at 3:00 p.m.
