GAME 1: Stockton 4, Dean College 1
Despite a strong performance on the mound from freshman hurler Ethan Bernardo (Pawtucket, R.I.), the Bulldogs dropped the first game of a twinbill with Stockton, 4-1, on Wednesday afternoon.
Dean took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Joshua Cerretani (Peabody, Mass.) led off the frame with a walk and then moved to second base on an infield hit by Bryce Reilly (Dover, N.H.). A Travis Dinsdale (Worcester, Mass.) fielder's choice put runners on the corners with one out and Landon Fish (New Port Richey, Fla.) plated Cerretani with a sacrifice fly to left.
After the Ospreys evened the score with a single run in the bottom of the inning, they moved ahead, 3-1 when Brendan Doherty drove in two runs with a single to center in the bottom of the fifth.
Stockton added an insurance run later in the inning when they Doherty scored on a double steal.
The Bulldogs did get a runner on in the sixth and then two in the seventh, but Rico Viani shut the door in picking up his third save of the year by inducing an inning ending double play in the sixth and then escaping a two-runners-on, one out situation in the seventh.
Bernardo, meanwhile, was impressive in his first collegiate appearance, tossing a complete game, allowing four hits and three earned runs.
GAME 2: Stockton 8, Dean College 6
The Ospreys scored five runs in the game-changing third inning then held on for an 8-6 win in the nightcap of a twinbill with the Bulldogs.
Rolando Marcano (Bridgeport, Conn.) had three hits and an RBI for Dean, who also got two hits, an RBI and a run scored from Andrew Dirito (Plymouth, Mass.), while Connelly drove in a pair of runs as well.
After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first, the Bulldogs pushed three runs across in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single from Marcano and a two-run double from Connelly.
Dean tacked on two more runs to jump out to a 5-1 lead in the second as Ben Chajet (Hillsboro Beach, Fla.) scored on a Dirito infield hit and then Zachary Bochenek (Fredericksburg, Va.) scored on a wild pitch.
Stockton answered back with their aforementioned five runs in the third which featured an RBI triple from Viani and a go-ahead two-run double from JJ Swentkowski.
Now in front 6-5, the Ospreys added another run in the fifth on a Doherty sacrifice fly.
Dean responded in the bottom of the sixth when Fish blasted his first career homerun with two outs in the bottom of the sixth.
Stockton was able to add an insurance run in the top of the seventh when they scored an unearned run off of reliever Alex Belanger (Southbridge, Mass.).
Overall, Belanger was the most effective of the three Bulldog hurlers, tossing 4.1 innings, allowing just three hits and one earned run while striking out five.
